Beautiful Panataran Temple

Picture: www.flickr.com

Penataran is the largest and most important Hindu temple complex in East Java. It lies Just 10 kilometres north of Blitar on the lower slopes of Mt Kelud. Dedicated to the god Siva, the temple was in use for at least three hundred years, from the 14th to 16th centuries. Most of the buildings which can be seen today, however, were constructed during Majapahit’s golden century.

The layout of the temple is similar to that found in the Balinese pura today. A number of small buildings are scattered within a sacred, walled enclosure, with the largest and most important temple at the rear of the complex. Hindu legends, among them the Ramayana epic, are carved in relief on the temple walls and terrace foundations.

KRESNA RELIEFS AT PANATARAN TEMPLE

In the aforementioned it was sais that the Kresna story was carved in the reliefs of Panataran temple. From closer observation it was detected that not all story lines of Kresnayana Kakawin were carved in the reliefs. The carved story lines were only those required, thus making the story incoplete.

The candi Panataran is located at Panataran village, Ngeglok sudistrict, Blitar regency, East Java Province, which formed a temple complex comprising Candi Induk , Candi Naga, Candi Angka Tahun (the Dated Temple), Pendopo Teras (terrace veranda) and Pendopo Agung (main veranda).(Pendopo Jav=open building without walls).

Kresnayana was carved on the walls of the second level of the principal shrine. The scenes start from the walls north of the ascending stairs at the west side. The reading is done by way of Pradaksina (walking clockwise with the temple on the right side). The story ends on the walls south of the ascending stairs at the west side.
The reliefs at Candi Panataran consist of 25 panels. Each panel comprises one and some have three to four.
